Cornish Maine Wedding Photographer // Creative Wedding Portraits with Artifical Lighting

I guess that I’m considered a “creative”. I am a photographer after all. As a result, I like to do just that…. create. My pictures need to constantly be changing and evolving. Although my pictures from 5 years ago still have the same similar style to them, they still vary from my more recent work… and in a totally good way! In my brain there are 2 very different reasons for this. The first is simple. Just like anyone else, if I’m constantly doing the same shit over and over again, I get very bored. You most certainly do not want a photographer that is bored of what they do! The second reason is that artificial light is a way to make an ordinary picture look extraordinary. Seriously, using artificial light for portraiture at weddings has been a game changer for me as far as creativity goes. It’s something that I discuss with all of my clients during their very first consult. I get them onboard day one. After all, these are the pictures that couples come to me after their wedding to blow up to make wall art for their homes.

Over the past few years I’ve started to incorporate more and more artificial light into my wedding portraits. After all, I use strobes for the reception anyway. So I have all of my gear with me. I also routinely use studio lighting for my newborn sessions. It’s not like I don’t know how to use it. So why not? My goal was to create something unique for my clients. Something that not every wedding photographer was capable of doing. It also helped to prepare me for winter weddings. You know the ones where its -2º outside, so you can scratch going outside for golden hour portraits because everyone involved will freeze to death!

Bottom line is, your wedding day will be a blur, but your pictures are forever. If your photographer asks you to step out of your reception for 5 minutes to try something cool, do not hesitate. You will not regret it. You may not be able to envision what they are at the time, but just wait. It’ll be something extraordinary!
