Cornish Maine Photographer // What To Wear To Your Photo Shoot
Clients often worry about to wear to their session. Truly, I believe that first and foremost, you must be comfortable! If you wear something that you are not comfortable in or wouldn’t normally wear then you will look awkward. I’ve seen it time and time again. Your photo shoot isn’t the time to try out that new trend that looks great on your best friend, but may very well look like crap on you!
Let’s start with the basics. What are you going to do with your pictures? If you are anything like me, you will be plastering the walls of your home with them. If this is the case, then you will want to wear something that is very neutral or matches the interior of your home. Think about what rooms need decorating. Do you already know that you want a huge piece of wall art for behind the sofa? Then try to find a color palette that matches.
Secondly, where is your session to take place? You never want to blend in with the background. Wearing all green while shooting in the woods may not work out like you planned. It may turn into the Where’s Waldo of engagement sessions. But if your photo shoot is out on the beach almost anything goes!
Let’s talk colors for a hot minute. I always suggest that one person picks what color they want to wear and then pick out complementary colors based off of that. Let’s be real. There’s always one person that cares more than the rest. Try not to be too matchy-matchy.I love how muted colors photograph and they typically are more neutral and match any decor. I also love all the fall tones, oranges, yellows and reds. The only thing that I suggest to clients is to stay away from florescent colors. Maybe it’s because I grew up in the 80’s that I despise them, but nonetheless, they will not look good in your pictures!
I also don’t think that you have to stay away from patterns. I get a lot of clients that dress in plaid (hello, this is Maine!) As a matter of fact, I encourage people to find a print that they like and roll with it. Sometimes it brings a more interesting palette to the session. A simple patterned scarf with a solid colored sweater always looks great! But, for the love of god, no logos or writing on t-shirts, unless it’s something super intentional like the “I’m going to be a big brother” kinda thing!
Regardless, how you dress, feel comfortable and CONFIDENT! I want you to feel absolutely stunning for your photo shoot. It will show in your pictures!
